Diwali-Ready

The 5-days of Diwali Celebration started today but the preparations in the Indian households had begun well in advance. Preparing sweets and delicacies, cleaning the house, re-doing the decor, adorning the garden with lights, shopping, planning the holidays and getting the travel tickets booked have kept all of us busy.

Diwali related pins have been afloat on Pinterest like never before. Consequently, my post Diwali Decor has been getting hits around the clock and some inquisitive DIYers have also had questions.

Let me take up the 'How you did that' before anything else.
There are actually only two easy steps to it.
  1. Paint the tea light candles with your chosen color of Acrylic paints, covering the wax-top and sides. Be sure to use a good consistency of paint. Keep it thick. That provides better coverage.
  2. Use glitter tubes to make designs on the candle. The craft glitter tubes available in stores would be perfect. To get neat designs, make sure that the tip of the tube does not touch the surface while you are making the design. Hold it slightly above the surface, just as you would do for henna.

'Can these be lit?
Yes! If you would have the heart to ;) These candles can be used just as their not-so-fancy, pale-white, straight-out-of-box kins. Once the wax has all been used up, you'll see the layer of acrylic paint with the glitter, left as residue. Sadly, I don't think that can be re-used. However, if you think of something, do let me know!

How are your Diwali preparations coming along. I am just a tad-bit ahead of the start line. Thanks to Nayana from Cherish Dream Live for sending in these beauties and the lovely hand written note, just in time for Diwali. They now adorn my entrance.

The kitchen had been looking at me with longing eyes since days, so I walked in last night to get started with some sweet making. My favorite from mom's kitchen, Coconut Barfi, like always, marked the beginning. In my head, I see myself preparing/doing a lot of other things but let's see how much of it actually gets realized. [Reminder to self: Just a day before Diwali!]

I shared this picture on IG and a few other groups, and have been asked for the recipe. Now the help-all-good-girl that I am being this Diwali, I thought to post the recipe for Coconut Barfi as well today.

NOTE:
1. Some milk can be used for grinding. Alternatively, the coconut can also be grated.
2. You might need to pat the grated/powdered coconut on the mixture.
3. An alternative to khoya is fresh cream.
4. To set the burfi, keep it in the refrigerator for some time. Flip the pieces of burfi and refrigerate again.
