Speak-Up or Bear-It

I have been watching a lot of Hindi TV serials… some by choice, others accidentally.  They all had something in common… no I am not talking about the 'Saas-Bahu' Saga (For international readers, 'Saas' is Mother-in-Law and 'Bahu' is Daughter-in-Law. Indian TV drama series nowadays are badly hit by the concept of including the family riots, to the extent that ‘Saas-Bahu’ is a new genre all together in the Indian television industry!)

In serial A, a young boy wants to marry the girl he loves but his father is against the marriage. The father wants his son to get married to his friend’s daughter. This young guy is stuck because he doesn’t want to hurt his father’s feelings but cannot even live without the love of his life. Confused, he hardly says anything to anyone.

In serial B, a widow with her two kids is living with her in-laws, who are not very kind to her. She toils day in and day out to serve her in-laws. What she gets in return is harsh words. Inspite of it all, she does not question anyone.

In serial C, a poor girl, barely into her 20s, gets married to a very rich guy; only to find out after marriage that he is a psychopath. At one instance, he showers all his love and the very next moment he beats her up brutally. The girl does not complain for fear of hurting her poor parents.

And this is not confined to TV serials alone.
All of us, at some point or the other have decided to keep quiet! The reason could be to avoid quarrel, out of respect for others or probably because one is under obligation. What if it's none of the above?

I sit back and wonder what should we call such people- people who decide to keep quiet against the bad? Innocent-Good-Souls OR Stupids-Ready-To-Bear-Anything?

I believe in rising up to the occasion. Views can be put forth without involving aggression and meanness. Keeping mum is like supporting false statements and accepting the blame for things you haven't done. If you won't talk for yourself... nobody else will!

What is your take on this... Speaking-Up to your heart's content or Bearing-It for other's sake ?

  3. Just do what keeps you happy <3 If you do things for other’s happiness and that also keeps you happy then do it or don’t repent, sulk and crib. Period.

  5. I agree!!! Sounds like a similar conversation I had with my little one about MLK and how sometimes, you just have to speak up for what you know in your heart is right, even when everyone else won't!!! :)
    Have a great weekend!!

  6. I liked the way you have made a point at he end of the post, totally unexpected :) :)
i think we keep quite sometimes out of fear and sometimes out of respect... and it took me some time after marriage to realize that in order to have my inner peace, i need to speak up and I need to put across my thoughts and slowly i have realized that its not really that difficult and it makes life so much more easy :) :)

  7. I would say.. Stupids ready to bear anything.. If we are clear about what we want in life, we wouldn't end up in such situations. :)

    1. Well, yes! Probably because they are more scared to voice out their opinion and their dependency on others just worsens it!
