Karva Chauth 2011

Festivities have started and soon we'll be home to celebrate Diwali. This was our last weekend in US before we leave for India. Amidst all the packing and shopping, we celebrated the festival of Karva Chauth on Saturday.

Since, a lot of my friends as non-Indians, I'll take a quick turn and share some information about Karva Chauth. Karva Chauth is an annual festival celebrated mostly by the Hindus and Sikhs in India. The married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and long life of their husbands. The fast begins with dawn. The women refrain from food and fluids (including water) till the moon rises. Once the women see the moon, they worship it and pray for their husbands' longevity.

Could have been better, if my left hand had not given up.

Though, it sounds difficult to spend the day without water, there are several things which make the fasting interesting. For me, fasting means, no cooking. No cooking means, no dishes to do and no cleaning *smile*. A day off from kitchen means time for other things. A chance to apply henna and boss around because you cannot do much with henna on the hands. Dress up and click as many photographs as you can!

This is how it turned out to be

Karva Chauth this year was a little unconventional for us. We spent most of the time in the mall. Came back, watched Big Boss (Indian version of Big Brother) and went off to sleep. Woke up for the rituals, ate to our stomach's content and slept again *grin*

Rituals

Sanket fasts with me. I know how important the morning cup of tea is to him. Karva Chauth is the only day of the year when he gives it up. I believe, there are other things that he values more than tea *smile*. I hope God has heard our prayers and showered upon us a lifetime of togetherness!

P.S.- Last year's Karva Chauth updates can be found here.

The Hair Affair

As a kid, my hair was never allowed to grow beyond shoulder-length. My Mom believed (or she just said that she did, to make us feel good about the hair cuts) in the theory - 'Cutting your hair makes it grow longer and healthier.' People say it's a myth. Accepted. In that case, the only reason for a head full of hair can be- Heredity or Healthy-Eating-Habits. But wait, we are not getting into this debate! Atleast, not now!

Back to where we left... kid... shoulder-length hair, popularly known as Blunt-Cut, in those days!

The frequent visits to the salon ended as a teenager and in a few years the length of my hair went from a few inches to more than half of my total height. Oh yes, you got it right, I belong to the petite gang!

Pros of Long Hair : It can actually make somebody fall in love with you. Ask my husband *wink*
Cons of Long Hair : If you don't experiment with your hair, you tend to get bored of it, to the extent that you start thinking of chopping it off. And that is exactly what I did.

The hair cut created a lot of hues and cries.
Disadvantage of a 'sudden' hair-cut : You break quite a few hearts including your Mom's!
Advantage of a 'sudden' hair-cut : You finally get to feel the breeze through your hair without worrying about the tangles.

With the passage of time, though the deterioration of volume continues to be an ongoing process, my hair has regained the length.  This time round, I am experimenting more with hair styles.

Why am I story-telling, here? I just thought of starting a new section on Kreative Korner - 'Hello Hair'. We'll be sharing the Hair Affairs in this little 'korner'. Though, I don't think that I'll ever do a hair-styling vlog or tutorial, I can always share the ones which I used during the learning process and obviously the end-results :)

Hope the new section would be helpful and enjoyable! Welcome to 'Hello Hair'!

The Monochromatic Challenge

Did you hop over to AquaSeventy6 to check out the features for the Floral Challenge? No! Click here. If you did, you'd know that they featured all the three dresses I showed you here and also the theme for this week's challenge - MONOCHROMATIC!!

If last week was fun, this week was really challenging. This explains why I came up with only one outfit! Anybody who knows me personally, would know it as a matter of fact that half of the clothes in my closet are Black! I have absolutely no idea about when and how that happened but it's true. Every time I go to stores, I pick up 'black' - for gifts too *grin*

An All-Black Outfit for the Monochromatic Challenge would have not been difficult but since I have been trying to avoid am avoiding black these days, I thought of adding a touch of gray to it. The top I am wearing is just as gray as my nail paint or visa-versa!

Again a $0 investment.
All the items are straight out of closet.
Bubble Top and Shrug from India.
Skirt from Forever 21
Boots from Kohl's
Neck piece is a gift from Mom.

I would love to see how you all take up the Monochromatic Challenge. Join the girls at Fabulously Frugal Fall Fashion Challenge. Click here or on the button below to get redirected to the information page.

Hope to see you there :)

P.S.- I just updated my settings. I did not realize earlier that 'Word Verification' was ON for my blog. I quickly turned it OFF. I hate to type in a (meaningless) string of characters before I can actually post a comment on my favorite posts. With the latest addition of 'sigma-s' and 'pi-s', the time I spend on refreshing and reentering, I would have easily spent on commenting on some other blog. I am really sorry because I made you hit those extra keys especially when I hate it myself. My blog is now 'comment-friendly' :) so please drop in some!!

The Loss of a Visionary

Last night, Sanket and I were cracking our nerves over a game of Cat Physics and an alert from CNN flashed on the iPad screen. 'Steve Jobs dies at an age of 56!' After all the media updates about his health, we all knew it was coming. He looked pale when I last saw him on the television screen. But the news was still not acceptable.

Ironically, we received the news on the device which was a brain-child of the genius, who was no longer alive. Sanket called-up his 'technology-partner' (read brother-in-law) to share the sad news. A call from an i-Phone to an i-Phone! Several Facebook updates that read 'RIP Steve Jobs' were done via Apple devices.

" The world has lost a visionary.
And there may be no greater tribute to Steve's success than the fact that
much of the world learned of his passing away on a device he invented."
- President Obama on the passing of Steve Jobs.

He was truly the master of the game! From Macintosh that we learnt about while growing up to all the 'i' devices, he's been the creative head behind it all. The more I read about him, the more I realize what an inspiration he and his ideas have been for the present day technology.

From a friend's Facebook profile

Steve's family says that he passed away peacefully. This was the least all the prayers could do for him.

May your soul rest in peace, SIR Steve Jobs!

The Game Called- Photo Editing!

I usually don't upload pictures on social networking sites. 'Profile Pictures' is the only zone, where I work on a regular basis. My last Profile Picture lasted from May through September, which for me was pretty unacceptable, especially when I had several pictures to choose from. What made it worse was a new Profile Picture on Sanket's page (which hardly ever happens unless I drag him into it).

I recently uploaded a new album on Facebook - Wrapping Up Memories!

If you read this post of mine, you'd by now know that I am in the middle of relocating. That means no more painting and no more crafts. We are already struggling to pack everything we have in 4 bags! The baggage limitation could not control the itch to do something colorful. I needed a break from following up with the Craigslist mails. Since, I am in a mood to pack up everything, I told myself- why not wrap up some memories :)

I started browsing through the pictures and decided to make collages rather than uploading single photographs. Selection of pictures-editing-collage-beautification... and this is what I whipped up! Sharing some of my favorite pictures-

I picked up some of my favorite pictures of the day
and that is what makes this collage special :)

Red Glassy-frame was added to match my top

Since I had only three pictures, I used the vector design to cover up for it.

I had a very, very, very tough time selecting the above four pictures out of the several photographs.
'Auto-mode' rocks!!

I did not want to disturb the serenity of these pictures clicked at Niagara Falls,
so I went ahead with a very simple collage.

Yellow Border for the All-Blue Pictures

The Vintage Look was used for the picture in the center.

A lot more collages coming up. Will share them if I like them enough to feature it here :)

P.S. ONE - No Photoshop used! I just explored the options provided by Picasa, Picnik and a some free online photo-editing softwares.

P.S. TWO - Count the number of times the word 'picture(s)' is used in this post! ;)
